Why Campus Bicycle Programs Often Fail

Unmanaged bicycle fleets quickly become administrative and operational burdens. Here is how Pedl solves every failure point.

1. Operations Team

No operations team

Universities do not have the operational capacity or dedicated staff to run a daily transit fleet.

Pedl Operations Team

Our dedicated, on-site marshals handle daily logistics, charging, safety checks, and user issues.

2. Fleet Maintenance

Poor maintenance

Unmanaged bicycles quickly deteriorate, leading to flat tires, broken locks, and unusable hardware.

Preventive maintenance

Scheduled physical inspections, proactive battery swaps, and rapid repairs keep cycles in peak condition.

3. Parking Control

Abandoned bicycles

Cycles end up scattered across pathways, clogging exits, or blocking accessibility ramps.

GPS monitoring

Active GPS tracking ensures cycles are parked only in designated geofenced hub zones.

4. Data Visibility

No usage visibility

Administrators have no analytics on fleet usage, trip counts, or busy corridors for planning.

Fleet dashboard

A secure console provides real-time telemetry, battery status, and trip metrics for admin reporting.

5. Fleet Balance

No accountability

Cycles pile up at low points or hostels, leaving other critical campus zones completely empty.

Redistribution

Our team uses telemetry data to actively rebalance and move cycles back to high-traffic hubs daily.

6. Vendor Structure

Fragmented ownership

Dealing with separate hardware, software, and lock vendors creates gaps when components fail.

Centralized management

A single operational partner covers the cycles, software, on-site team, and complete accountability.

The difference isn't the bicycle.
It's the operating model.

From structural deployment design to daily maintenance — Pedl runs the system on campus under a unified SLA, so your administrators do not have to.

Early Conversations & Industry Feedback

"Pedl was developed through direct consultation with campus administrators to solve the operational realities of institutional mobility."

In discussions with Vice Chancellors, Estate Departments, and Infrastructure Teams across universities and medical campuses, we heard a consistent challenge: standard bicycle purchases decay into unusable assets within a few months due to flat tires, dead batteries, and fragmented maintenance.

These conversations shaped the Pedl model. Campuses do not need to buy hardware. They need a turnkey mobility service. We assume all operational and maintenance responsibility, ensuring cycles remain balanced, operational, and active under a dedicated service agreement.

To ensure quality during our initial deployments, we are selecting a limited cohort of campuses for our Founding Pilot Partner Program. Pilot sites receive customized site planning, geofenced hub layouts, and dedicated operations setup support.
